When Katniss and Peeta return to District 12 to see When the two victors leave that their families are in even worse shape with Peacekeepers attacking people more frequently than ever. Katniss and Peeta though they shared moments in the Hunger Games have come home and barely spoken, and Katniss’ actions are watched by all. Once home, Snow announces that this year with be the Quarter Quell, where all previous victors of the Hunger Games go through a reaping to go back into the arena. When the reaping happens, Haymitch’s name is called Peeta volunteers, and with Katniss being the only female victor from District 12, she automatically becomes a tribute.
Back in the Capital Peeta and Katniss are prepped for the Quarter Quell and in a sign of rebellion Cinna designes a dress that resembles a mockingjay when Katniss spins, which she does during the live interview. In response to the dress, Snow has Cinna beat in front of Katniss just as she goes back into the arena.
As the Games begin Katniss allies herself with Johanna Mason, Peeta, Finnick Odair, Mags, Wiress and Beetee, who unbeknownst to her are all there to keep her alive because she is the hope and the hope for a future rebellion. As the other tributes protect her she is always concerned about keeping Peeta alive and when they decide to cause a power failure in the arena they are rescued. Katniss finds herself in a plane with Haymitch, the gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee, and Finnick and learns that the rebellion has begun and Johanna and Peeta have been taken to the Capital.
The movie ends when Katniss wakes up from being sedated by Gale who says tells her that her sister Prim, and mother are fine, but that District 12 has been demolished by Snow’s forces.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire stays quite close to the books, with only a few noticeable differences and establishes the new characters quite quickly but without giving them the back stories which I feel are quite important.
The story moves smoothly, from the Victory Tour to District 12, and then back to the Capital for the Quarter Quell and the director did a great job of conveying the concern that Katniss has for Peeta when they’re about to go back into the games.
The acting in this movie I felt was better than the first, with the supporting cast of characters even stronger the main characters.
When Katniss and Peeta won the 74th Hunger Games they never dreamed that they would have to go back, let alone less than a year later.
